Au revoir, cable!

Yesterday, we made a unanimous decision to cancel our cable.

Save for a few weeks (combined) while moving, I've never not had cable. Oh, sure, I haven't always had 200 channels and a DVR, but I've always had some form of cable.

We quit the fancy stuff today. The basic leaves us Sunday.

We just realized that we were paying the cable company roughly $75 per month to waste our time. That's $50 per month, or $600 a year, for me and Brian. I could think of a lot better things to do with our $600. Especially when I consider how much television is available online, through Netflix, and through broadcast TV. I also like the thought of it taking more work to watch TV this way. Perhaps we'll watch what we really want to instead of whatever happens to be on.

Wish us luck!

I did this over a year ago and thought I'd really miss it. It's funny, there were a few times at the beginning where I'd just walk over to the tv and stand there...times when I was procrastinating or in a bad mood and would have loved nothing more than zoning out to the Real Housewives of Wherevs...and nothing was there. I distinctly remember thinking, "Now what the @#!! am I supposed to do with myself?"

But I don't miss it at all. I have the 2/Netflix subscription and half the times it takes me over a week to watch that. And I'm no longer sucked into the stupid tv shows I once watched. Involuntarily, and forcibly-automatically, I've become more productive at home.

The only caveat is that you can waste as much time online as you can watching tv. :)
