30 Day Journal Challenge - Days 9 & 10 +

30 Day Journal Challenge - 9

Day 9 - Play with typography - describe someone special.

30 Day Journal Challenge - 10

Day 10 - Collections!

The picture describing my fun embroidered/needlepoint art collection is inspired by these gems I got at a weird thrift store on the west coast a couple of weeks ago.

I'll be mostly blog-free this weekend, as I'll be taking my Friday off + the traditional weekend and spending it here:

Vamos a la playa! Hasta luego!

30 Day Journal Challenge - Days 7 & 8

During the summer, I have Fridays off. It's really amazing and it's turning me into a spoiled brat, but it also means that my Monday - Thursday are extra long. I feel like I wake up, go to work, come home, eat, sleep, repeat.

Luckily, I'm holding myself to the 30 Day Journal Challenge, so I get to sneak some creativity in everyday. And, lucky for you, the magic of cell phones with the ability to load directly to Flickr allows me to share my pages!

30 Day Journal Challenge - 7
Day 7: What you feel like today (Sunday). I was, clearly, all over the place.

30 Day Journal Challenge - 8
Day 8: Inside jokes. I could fill a whole book. These are some of my favorites.

I really enjoy putting my wacky brain on paper.

30 Day Journal Challenge - 3
Day 3: Draw a picture of someone you love & write why they mean so much to you

30 Day Journal Challenge - 4
Day 4: What does your heart look like?

30 Day Journal Challenge - 5
Day 5: Favorite blogs

30 Day Journal Challenge - 6
Day 6: Draw something that represents time & things that you need to do at this time

I'm having so much fun with this. It's also really great to see what other people are doing on the Flickr group.

Summer Camp: Project One!

My friend erin is joining me in my Red Velvet Art Summer Camp adventures. I have Fridays off work during the summer, so we've designated Friday as Summer Camp day.

Today, we worked on the first project, the Summer Log journal. We each used purple woodgrain fabric and puffy paint for our covers.

Summer Camp Project One

We're going to end up waaayyy behind schedule, but then we'll have projects all summer! Are you working on anything fun this summer?

Sleep...

I finally did it - I bought a body pillow. Being short, it's basically as big as I am, but I love it! I splurged and got this awesome bicycle cover for it at Target. I want to make another cover for it myself, but I couldn't pass up this cute pre-made one.

Hooray for snuggly sleeping!

30 Day Journal Challenge - Days 1 & 2

On Monday of this week, I started a new project: 30 Day Journal Challenge! I've wanted to journal more frequently, but never seemed to make it happen. Something like this is great motivation to go for it.

I'm a big fan of Moleskine kraft notebooks, so I decided to use one of those for my journal.

I also really like the look of black Sharpie on the covers, so that's what I went with.

30 Day Journal Challenge - Cover

The first day's prompt was to create an introduction page using your name.

30 Day Journal Challenge - 1

Today's prompt was "the best part of your day".

30 Day Journal Challenge - 2

As much as I hate waking up in the morning, I do enjoy the time I get to spend alone, eating my breakfast, drinking my coffee, and watching whatever ridiculous television I want.

Do you journal? If so, do you share your pages anywhere?

Surprise!

A few days ago, I saw these things growing near our front walkway. They looked like weeds, but they seemed determined and pretty hearty.

And then, last night, I noticed a little flower blooming. To my surprise, I realized it was a sunflower! They're all three sunflowers!
Last year, a coworker gave me a tiny pot and sunflower seeds, and those things grew like weeds. I transplanted them to a pot near the walkway at home. Apparently, those were some pretty determined sunflowers. The original plants died, but not before they propagated, resulting in these new surprise flowers.
Perhaps I have a green thumb after all!

Dream Job

Earlier today, while listening to NPR and shuffling paperwork, I was hit with a spell of jealousy; Someone at NPR has the job title "Kids' Music Reviewer". My first thought: "How do I get that gig?!"

Despite having no children and rarely being around young children, I'm a big fan of children's music. I guess the one aspect of this that makes it less creepy and weird is that I don't like just any kids' music. I'm not sitting at home rocking out to the Wiggles and Barney. I mean, I do have some level of taste, people.

I thought I should share some of this (slightly bizarre) love with all of you. Perhaps those of you with children will be particularly interested (but I'm telling you, don't turn away my childless cohorts!). Below you will find a couple of my favorites that I could track down on the interwebs.

The Bear Gees - Bearobics. Visiting friends uncovered this record in my boyfriend's record collection a few years back. I'm still upset that we were dating a couple of years without him telling me about this. This record is, as you can imagine, music by the Bee Gees re-imagined by teddy bears. The whole theme of the record is being healthy and encouraging your lazy teddy bears to get moving. There's some good advice here: "Be careful not to snack too much!"

The Telephone Company. This is my favorite kids' music band by far. By sheer luck, my boyfriend happens to be friends with the singer, so I'm the proud owner of their only (to-date) album - complete with themed shrinky dinks!

Yummy burritos!

A good idea yesterday morning + cross-stitch fabric + leftover reddish embroidery thread + needle + time + camera + lots of editing + lots of fidgeting with HTML and Inkscape =
My newly re-done blog! I imagine I'll be tweaking some things, but not today. I'm tired of looking at it for now! Enjoy!

Blog Buttons...That Work!

I stayed up past my bedtime hatching out a blog button plan the other night. I posted them and happily went to sleep-land.

Luckily, my fellow blogger and Summer-Camper was kind enough to alert me to the fact that they didn't work.

Well...I believe the problem is fixed now (right? - I tested them, but do tell if you find otherwise). You'll find two buttons to choose from right there <--- on your left.

More (and a complete blog-revamp) to come! Stay tuned...

Note to Self

Move your thumb out of the way when stapling documents.

Public Service Announcement

Bicycle + car =

So be careful!

My roommate got hit while riding his bike home from work today. He's okay (we think - he and Brian are at the ER right now), but he's pretty damn banged up and as you can see, his bike is annihilated.

When you ride a bicycle, be safe! Don't ride like a maniac. Have headlights and tail lights if you're riding at night. Signal your turns. Obey traffic laws.

When you drive your car, watch out! Pay attention. There are pedestrians and cyclists everywhere, and if it's you versus them - it's not a fair fight.
