The One Good Thing About Miami

The place they played last night (Sweat Records) had my favorite (now out of production) Kidrobot Yummy Breakfast keychains! I bought two and they were (luckily) two I did not have!

We also had a pretty good time on the way down, but I'll get to that later...

Happy Dinnertime!

We ate such a happy dinner last night! (It was mostly an accident, but once I realized it was making a face, I had to make it happen.) The ingredients of the face are as follows:

Eyes: Papusas (recipe from Vegan Lunch Box Around the World), topped with cheese, chipotle salsa, and sour cream

Mouth: Frozen southwest veggie blend from Target

I think the vegan gods were punishing me for de-veganizing this recipe by making me mess up on the ingredients. I couldn't find anything labeled "masa harina" as the recipe demanded, so I bought fine corn meal. Alas, I made water mixed with corn meal! But I added seasoning, cooked it down, and made it work. Another score for Vegan Lunch Box Around the World!

My Lunch This Week!

I'm on lunch and just ate some of this, so I thought I would share. I made a huge batch of pasta salad last night, inspired by a recipe from my aunt from years & years ago. I only vaguely remember what she included, but I know it was yummy and featured broccoli, pepperoni, mozzarella, and obviously, pasta.

So, mine:
8oz (or so) rotini, cooked until al dente, drained, rinsed under cold water
Fresh broccoli florets (I used a huge stalk)
Grape tomatoes, chopped in half (about 2/3 package)
Mozzarella, cubed (about 1/2 a block)
Lightlife Smart Deli "pepperoni" (about 1/2 a box)
Asiago Balsamic vinaigrette (any Italian style dressing would do), to taste

Mix. Enjoy! It's super-simple, but I never would've thought of mixing those ingredients on my own, so I thought I would share.

Sarasota Trip

We took a roadtrip to Sarasota yesterday for a show at New College. We took the scenic route there in order to check out thrift stores along the way. We were in the middle of nowhere, so there was all kinds of crazy stuff

Like a flea market with circus shows.

And the shopping center from Edward Scissorhands.

New College is gorgeous. If I had a time machine, I think I would go back a decade or so and go to school there.

I Get to Work Here!

I love the Sanford campus on Fridays. There are not a lot of classes in session, so it's so quiet and peaceful. It was overcast today, but otherwise it was a great day to sit outside and enjoy it. This was the view while eating my tasty avocado cucumber sandwich and reading Craft, Inc.

It's going to be great to back in my office and settled next week, but I will miss all of my outside time.

Top Five Comedies of the 90's

For some strange reason, our household just went off on a complete tangent and started the long process of making a Top Five Comedies of the 90's list.

Here it is, in no particular order:

Wayne's World
The Big Lebowski*
South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut
Office Space
Dumb & Dumber*

(*NOTE: Not every member of our household voted for every movie on our list. You could probably guess who didn't vote for these two.)

Homeade Stromboli!

Last night I made stromboli for the first time. It was based on the recipe from Vegan Lunch Box Around the World, but with different veggies (and with cheese). I made mine with zucchini, mushrooms, onion, and mozzarella. I thought it was going to explode in the oven, but it was still basically sealed up.

I highly recommend Vegan Lunch Box Around the World (and veganlunchbox.blogspot.com)!

What I Learned Today...

I used Windows 7 for the first time today. I won't get into my issues with it, but I do want to share something I really like about it: the desktop themes! I have no problem admitting I'm nerdy enough to enjoy having my desktop background change on its own. However, to me, the best part of some of the art used in the pre-installed themes. My absolute favorite is this one:

The handsome cupcake fellow in the bottom right corner is one of the best things I've ever seen. I had no clue who the artist was, but set out on a mission to figure it out. After a lot of Googling, I realized the artist's name was wear it should be: attached to the file. Kat Leuizinger. Unfortunately, I can't find much of her work anywhere (except zipper pulls and a non-functional website). I want more!

Winter Wardrobe

I always say that I look better in winter clothing, and I mean it! Maybe it's just that my love of sweaters, scarves, and such shines through. You have to understand, it's a pretty rare occasion to pull out cold weather clothing in Central Florida. I picked up this short sleeved sweater this weekend. It's the second of its kind that I've found this month. I'll post a picture of the other soon!

Neighborhood Quackers

This is what it's like all of the time in front of my mom's apartment. I'm jealous of the quackers walking right up to her front door. She hates them because they start their quacking at 6am.

Destination Destin!

I actually get a week off for Spring Break this year! And I will be spending the majority of it on an actual vacation! At the beach!

My mom and dad used to own a house in Destin, FL before I was born and shortly afterwards. My dad hasn't seen it since then, so he booked a condo and invited us to join them (him + stepmom). They'll get to escape the snow, and I'll get to spend the week in a part of FL I would never otherwise visit. Plus, Brian and I just bought the book Oddball Florida, and a lot of the attractions are up that way. It will be an interesting week!

A Beautiful (Chilly) FL Day

The thing on my head is the kercheif I made over the weekend with my birthday knitting needles. It was my first experience increasing stitches and using circular needles.

I love the circular needles! They were especially useful to transport the project to Brian's parents' house (where they watched the Superbowl and I sat in an easy chair knitting like someone's grandmother).

Now I need to find more excuses to use my new needles. Suggestions?

My day at work...

I was only at the Sanford campus for a couple of hours this morning, but it was an eventful time.

First thing this morning, I made friends with a poofer! He was just hanging out in the parking lot. He let me get really close. If he let me get any closer, I would've snatched him up and taken him home!
Then, when I was leaving, I saw these awesome giant birds. They were just hanging out by the Science building. I have no idea what they're called, I love these birds.

Two Things

(The following is not a paid advertisement; simply a bit of nerdiness.)

Pictured here are a couple of my favorite things this week: Yes to Cucumbers Soothing Eye Gel & Badger Sleep Balm.

I'm not an insomniac, but I do often have trouble telling my brain to settle down when it's sleepy time. The balm smells great and subtly nudges me to calm down. And no matter how much sleep I get, I've inherited a bit of the poofy/dark-circle-y eye syndrome, and the gel really seems to help with that.

That's the end of today's (unpaid) product placement. Stay tuned for next time!
